Claude Sonnet scores 3.6/100 overall in the r/codex community benchmark, collected October 7, 2026 from 49 posts and 289 comments. Its strongest category is Price / value at 88/100, and its weakest is Reliability & uptime at 62/100.
Confidence: low — Coverage: 49 posts mentioning Claude Sonnet from a single subreddit (r/codex) inside the window the archive labels month, with up to 40 kept comments per post across the 10 highest-scored posts — 289 kept comments in total. The sample is benchmark reactions and CLI-bridge practicalities; speed, instruction-following, long-context, creative-writing and vision statements are absent, so those categories are null on purpose. What this is not: an independent measurement — the headline evidence is a third-party benchmark screenshot commenters themselves dispute.
Category scores
Intelligence
76The Vals AI benchmark thread is the direct evidence — 'Sonnet 5.5 on Vals AI benchmark, if these hold true the $20 is insane value right now' — and the community conclusion is 'We're in the very funny situation where Sonnet is better than Sol. Likely significantly better.'
Speed
no dataNo data in the sample — Sonnet's top threads are about benchmark placement and subscription value, never generation speed.
Coding quality
78Benchmark wins plus first-hand scale: 'It took like 1 second to deliver something that I was strugling with Astra Max. And gave me ideas I didn't even thought about', with users treating the benchmark as a real Opus-class challenger at a fraction of the price.
Instruction following
no dataNo direct adherence statements in the sample.
Long context
no dataNo data in the sample.
Price / value
88The strongest value claim of any ranked model: '$20 claude right now already good value. It provides like 1100-1300$ api prices and 5b+ tokens for opus 5.5', and 'the different in value that the 20$ subscription provides, however, is dramatic'.
Reliability & uptime
62Read as the more stable subscription — 'Claude is good with performance, release actual better models with cost cut, more stable usage overall' — with the residual worry being Anthropic's account-ban strictness when routed through third-party CLIs.
Creativity & writing
no dataNo data in the sample — the writing debate lives on other models' threads; Sonnet is never judged on prose in its top threads.
Multimodal & vision
no dataNo data in the sample.
Agentic & tool use
66The 'Opus and Sonnet in Codex' thread shows the practical pattern: Anthropic models driven inside Codex via the Claude CLI ('It uses the CLI as it's connection point. Claude said it was ok'), giving one harness for both fleets.
Summary
The sample is 10 posts from r/codex inside the window the archive labels month, with up to 40 kept comments per post (289 kept in total), and it catches Sonnet 5.5 at the moment it became the affordable challenger in a Codex-focused community. The flagship thread is 'Dev Day? More like Death Day' (1,109 points) — 'Mr Altman. A second anthropic model has hit the leaderboard.' — followed by the Vals AI benchmark thread: 'Sonnet 5.5 on Vals AI benchmark, if these hold true the $20 is insane value right now'.
The value math is the most quoted: '$20 claude right now already good value. It provides like 1100-1300$ api prices and 5b+ tokens for opus 5.5', and the measured take — 'it's not as bad as it looks. sonnet is better than astra for the same price, but not that much. the different in value that the 20$ subscription provides, however, is dramatic.' The community conclusion on capability: 'We're in the very funny situation where Sonnet is better than Sol. Likely significantly better.'
First-hand depth is thin beyond single-task anecdotes — 'It took like 1 second to deliver something that I was strugling with Astra Max. And gave me ideas I didn't even thought about' — and the benchmark itself is contested: 'So first i hear this benchmark is shit as astra obviously was better than other models and now its suddenly good benchmark?' Even the fans hedge with 'if these hold true'.
The practical adoption pattern is the 'Opus and Sonnet in Codex' thread: running Anthropic models inside Codex through the Claude CLI ('It uses the CLI as it's connection point. Claude said it was ok'), with the recurring worry being Anthropic's ban strictness — 'Hello Claude account ban? Aren't they quite persnickety about people doing this?' Sonnet is cast throughout as the affordable understudy to Opus 5.5 rather than the community's headline model.
Everything here is archive-derived sentiment from a self-selected Reddit sample: no independent measurements, and the benchmark numbers are a third-party screenshot commenters dispute.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Benchmark-validated value: 'Sonnet 5.5 on Vals AI benchmark, if these hold true the $20 is insane value right now', with claimed $1,100-1,300 of API-equivalent usage on a $20 plan.
- Conceded better than OpenAI's challenger tier: 'We're in the very funny situation where Sonnet is better than Sol. Likely significantly better.'
- Fast concrete wins: 'It took like 1 second to deliver something that I was strugling with Astra Max. And gave me ideas I didn't even thought about.'
- Runs inside Codex through the Claude CLI, so teams keep one harness across both vendors.
Cons
- Its headline evidence is a third-party benchmark, not community measurement: even fans hedge 'if these hold true', and skeptics note the same users who called the benchmark shit now celebrate it ('now its suddenly good benchmark?').
- Shadowed by its own sibling — most praise in r/codex is for Opus 5.5, with Sonnet cast as the affordable understudy ('Im waiting for Haiku =)').
- Anthropic account-ban strictness is the practical worry for CLI routing: 'Hello Claude account ban? Aren't they quite persnickety about people doing this?'
- Little first-hand depth: Sonnet's top threads are reactions to announcements and benchmark screenshots, with thin hands-on reporting beyond single-task anecdotes.

Competition is awesome”

atomfitz · 48 points neutral view on Reddit ↗ “It’s abundantly clear, and I made a post about this and what was going on. OpenAI chose to go the “squeeze the consumer” route. You can clearly see that Claude is delivering performance. You understand they’re not going to give you free resets, but they’re giving you a product that’s extremely capable and efficient, and they’re not raising your prices, are they? I want the best for OpenAI, but their approach has been to drop shitty models, squeeze the customer base, and then hand out free resets like that somehow fixes the problem. No. We want something that’s state-of-the-art and efficient without you gouging us for more money. If Claude can do it with far less compute, then what the fuck is OpenAI doing? At this point, it feels like they’re just trying to squeeze more money out of you for a dogshit model.”
